Are you planning a visit to “the happiest place on earth”? If you’re in Florida today, try to put off your theme park visit until tomorrow. The first role of B2B success is, always, don’t piss off your workers. The State of Florida did just that with its so-called “Don’t Say Gay” law.

In response, Disney workers have walked off the job for brief periods over the past several days and are planning a full-day of job action today. According to Patricia Campos-Medina, executive director of the Worker Institute at Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations, the walk outs illustrate how workers will protect each other when corporations refuse to take responsibility.

“The walk outs at Disney demonstrate that workers and unions understand their responsibility to protect workers goes beyond wages and working conditions. It expands to the protection and the safety of their LGTBQ+ members and their families in the communities where they live,” said Campos-Medina. “The ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill is not just identity politics. It changes employment dynamics because it codifies discrimination against LGBTQ+ community in the public sphere. Corporations like Disney that built their brand on the idea of inclusion must now demonstrate its corporate responsibility by stating in public its position on laws that excludes and discriminates an entire community.”

The company has also expanded its creative team under Creative Director Alex Lambert. Are women choosing happiness at higher rates than men? It has not gone without notice that women have been quitting their jobs far more often than men over the past two years. Bain & Company’s recent study, The Fabric of Belonging: How to Weave an Inclusive Culture, offers some insights. The firm surveyed more than 4,500 women in seven different countries and across all levels of their organizations about how they think and feel about inclusion in the workplace. The result? On average, only 25% of women feely fully included in the workplace.

According to the research, women who feel fully included are 11 times more likely than those who do not to be promoters of their companies while women who feel excluded are three times more likely to quit than those who feel included.

“Inclusion is one of the most important factors in hiring, engaging and retaining women in the workplace,” said Bianca Bax, partner in Bain & Company’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion practice. “To weather the impacts of the Great Resignation, it is critical for employers to get a deep understanding of their organization’s talent—in this case women—by listening to their stories and incorporating the nuances to increase their feelings of inclusion and, in turn, enabling them to thrive.”

B2BNN covered this issue extensively in our award-nominated series on how the shecession pandemic is worse for women, society and the economy.
