The news from Monday morning ranges from federal finances to a new launches, but it all comes from the realm of tech startups.

StartUp Canada, the national organization representing the country’s startups, issued a press release in response to the federal budget agreeing that entrepreneurs are “crucial to the country’s recovery.”

In particular, the association points to the launch of the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Development Program as an excellent initiative to help entrepreneurs access funding and capital, mentorship, financial planning services, and business training.

The Canadian startup Couply won the annual PITCH contest at the Collision Conference last week. The free app helps couples improve their relationships by suggesting gifts and date ideas. The app will also remind couples about important occasions in their lives together.

“Couply works on research-based quizzes, and that gives us the filter so that we can give people this custom information that’s based on their personality type. This is an area we’re excited to continue to explore as we grow partnerships with people in this space,” said co-founder Tim Johnson.

Angel investors are betting on the next round of startups from the quantum computing sector. Late last week the University of Maryland launched an incubator for quantum-focused startups. The Quantum Startup Foundry has an initial $25 million US investment from the university’s Discovery Fund.

“While the promise of quantum may seem far off, it’s not,” said UMD Chief Innovation Officer Julie Lenzer who will also lead the Quantum Startup Foundry. “The future is quantum, and it starts now.”
